Animal Man

12

By Ed Ainsworth

"See Red? Oh Come On Baker, this is hardly the time for puerile jokes." Extrano let loose a burst of energy, a blast that singed the blades of grass as it shot through the air.

"Flea," Buddy said simply, his mind dipping into the Blood reef that was the Red. The Animals, at least to him, were arranged as nature intended. The Animals knew this was their battle, and across the world, he could feel their tension, their trepidation. Buddy was their champion, a warrior for their rights, for their feelings, for their ideas and powers and places. Buddy was their Messiah.

Fact: If the Flea was proportional to human size, its strongest leap could propel it to the Moon and Back.

Buddy leapt over the blast, shooting towards Extrano, and throwing his fists forwards, like a naked bullet.

"Dragonfly."

Fact: Dragonflies are one of the most deadly and powerful hunters in the insect kingdom, always attacking from behind.

Buddy collided with Extrano, knocking him off his feet and rearing backwards, balling his fist so hard his knuckles cracked, it went against the instinct of the Dragonfly, but he needed a fast velocity, and 74cm/second was enough to push Extrano off balance.

"Boxing Crab."

Fact: The boxing crab has twin anemones on its claws, and takes its name from its form of feeding; jabbing violently into the open to collect plankton in the anemones before nibbling it off.

His fist smashed against Extrano's jaw, breaking three of his molars, and dislocating it. Extrano yelped in pain as his face already began to bruise, blood swelling in his mouth, forcing him to gag and choke. He thrust a hand in front of Buddy, throwing him backwards with a bolt of mystical energy.

Buddy hit the ground hard, as Extrano pulled his hand back for a powerful blast.

"Hippo."

Fact: An Average Hippo weighs 3 Tons. 1 Ton of that weight is Dermis. A Hippo's skin is so thick and tough it is bulletproof.

Buddy charged into the energy beam, the first layer of skin was burnt away, leaving him breathing harshly through his gritted teeth, charging at Extrano, he wouldn't stop until the Magician was out of commission. His body plowed into the Mystics, throwing him off his feet.

Extrano, using his now superior strength pulled Buddy up into the air, again grabbing the heroes' neck. His legs dangling in the air, Buddy reached out for an Animal that might help him in this situation.

"Slug."

Fact: Slugs, like Snails are of the order Gastropoda. It means "Stomach Foot." Its stomach juices are also the mucus that it moves on.

Buddy lean forwards, vomiting his own stomach juices onto Extrano, only mixed with the Slugs own powerful, viscous and thick juices. Extrano let out a disgusted cry, and let Buddy go. He fell onto his feet and swung his fist up at Extrano, who ducked out of the way at it, and let Buddy have a full scale electromagnetic blast.

Buddy flew through the air, smashing through the lower levels of his house, and skidding to a halt in the wreckage of the kitchen, Glass fragments, and splinters were lodged in his already fragile and broken skin. Blood seeped from every hole, and the wisps of wind that tore through the tattered house tore at his red skin like the claws of a lion.

"Elephant." Buddy whispered to himself, as he lay deadly still in the Wreckage. Extrano's high boots crunched through the broken glass, and then all was silent. He was trying to sneak up on Buddy.

Fact: Elephants are able to detect sound through their fatty pads in their feet. Each sound wave has a different feel, and its strength depends on the reaction from the signaling Elephant.

"Wolverine." Buddy shouted, leaping upwards and smashing his fists just underneath Extrano's shoulders, pushing them both into the air, with Extrano screaming in pain.

Fact: Wolverines are noted amongst the most tenacious of all Mustelids, known for its ability to take down and consume prey that's several times larger than itself.

"DAMN YOU BAKER!" Extrano pressed his hands against Buddys cheeks and uttered something, before letting loose a wicked smile.

"I've just poisoned you Baker."

Buddy started to feel a little woozy, as Extrano's massive fist pummeled into his chest, sending him hurtling outside of the house again. As he flew through the air, he reached out once more into the Red.

"Honey Badger."

Fact: Another member of the Mustelid family, Honey badgers are well known for their ability to metabolize poisons, particularly the poisons of the snakes it eats. Avoiding the problem of how to kill it, the honey badger simply bites off the head and digests the poison glands.

As Buddy started to metabolize the poison, Extrano came stumbling from the house. He was starting to hurt a lot, and Buddy was going to use this. Getting to his feet, also woozily, he walked towards Extrano.

Extrano responded by firing off massive bursts of energy, great bolts that shot through the air.

"Cheetah."

Fact: The Cheetah has one of the most flexible spines in the animal kingdom, allowing incredible freedom of movement when running.

Buddy twisted his body into almost inhuman positions as he dodged each and every energy blast from Extrano, vaulting on his hands, landing on a foot, flipping backwards and twisting in mid air he reached out into the Red again.

"Spitting Cobra."

Fact: The spitting Cobra can spray globules of poison up to 2 Meters in front of it.

Extrano reel backwards, tiny poison particles going into his eyes causing him to scream in agony, throwing his hands about to try and fend off Buddy, who stalks in low, underneath Extrano's wildly thrashing hands.

"Bear."

Fact: Bears are one of the strongest Mammals in the Animal Kingdom, growing to be the tallest carnivore, with the Grizzly Bear standing erect at 15 feet tall.

Wrapping his hands around Extrano's he crushes the mages fingers and wrist inside his own hands before releasing them and back handing him across the ground.

"Cockatoo."

Fact: The Parrot family has a modified Beak and beak hinge, allowing for greater movement in its gape.

Buddy bit down on Extrano's hand, pruning two of his fingers off, and spitting them on the ground in front of him.

As Extrano reeled backwards, Buddy brought his hand out and raked it across his chest.

"Giant Ant Eater."

Fact: Whilst used predominantly to dig for ants and termites, the claws of the Ant eater could easily eviscerate a man.

Extrano stumbled backwards, clutching his heavily bleeding chest with a broken and bloodied hand. He looked at Buddy, and saw for the first time, not a hero easily broken, but a man, powered by nature. Perhaps one of the most powerful humans alive.

The final blow landed across Extrano's jaw, breaking it and dropping him finally like a lead weight. Buddy stood over him, knuckles broken and bleeding, out of breath, naked and lacking a few layers of skin.

"Man."

Fact: Buddy Baker is Hardcore.

"Buddy?" Ellen called softly; she had tears rolling down her cheeks and a hand over her mouth. She couldn't believe what she'd just seen. Her husband was an Animal. A monster. He'd endangered their children and her, and now he'd almost killed a man. She'd only just made it out of the house when the fighting was going on, she cradled Cliff, who was still badly injured, and Maxine clung to her leg, crying at the sight of her Father battering someone half to death.

"El?" He turned around, offering a smile to his wife, and shrugging his shoulders like he'd just forgotten to get something from the shops.

"I'm sorry you had to see that, but he was threatening my family. He was threatening you and.JESUS!" His attention snapped away from Ellen over to where Anna was. She'd some how escape the majority of the fight, and was floating through the air now.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"It is time." Maya said to the Parliaments before her.
"The World soul is conscious, she knows of her destiny. We have spoken, in our way, about her new place in the world."
Maya let out a long drawn sigh, as she stood up, the seat of her Island at the centre of the World, glowing with a pale light, the Hand of The Source pulling itself free from the moorings of its inter-dimensional prison.
"We go now into the Hands of the Creator, The Word shall purge the remains of our influences from this world."
"Is it wise to leave the World entrusted to the care of a child?"
"Wisdom is nothing if not fallible." Maya said simply, stepping into the palm of the hand, whilst the rocks and the flames moved towards each finger.
"Then we must hope that the World will survive."
The Swamps of Georgia
The Word, in his garb so similar to the Spectre tore through the air, the Clade Trees and the Mushroom circles are destroyed simply by his line of sight. He is God's Exterminator, and he hated this job.
"False Prophets"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Buddy pawed at the air in front of Anna as she floated higher, ripples of energy tearing through the atmosphere as something hard and metallic shot from the upper portions of the house.

It was B'Wanna Beast's former garb, his power source Helmet tore across the ground, driving huge swaths through the Earth, shooting tendrils of energy from its shiny body.

They flicked out, like bright blue tendrils, wrapping themselves around the elementals. Tefé, Red Tornado, and Firestorm were the first to be wrapped in its grips. Tefé yelled and the Tornado juddered violently.

"What's going on?" Ellen yelled, but Buddy and Maxine already knew. Buddy could see it happening.

The Air around Anna was shimmering, and portions of the world could be seen; tiny pinholes into creation, tearing energy loose through the world, crashing into the Earth, and the sky, and the ocean, seeping through the Mantle and into the Magma flow below.

Anna had been anointed, and upgraded. She was the Earth elemental now. Buddy knew she was a replacement for the World Soul, but he didn't realize that she'd be pulled into her position so soon. Her powers hadn't developed; she wasn't even a year old. How could she understanding things when she couldn't even control her bladder?

Arguably Maya may had started at the time, but the difference was, the World as still a child itself when she began. If it was left to continue, Anna could rip the world apart, the way Maya had when the Earth was young.

"Oh Crap." Buddy said to himself, as the rifts around Anna grew larger.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Markovia :
Brion's hands thrust two large barriers of Rock up from the ground in front of him, as the Tendrils tore through his Palace. His feet pumped against the ground as he sped away from the energy. Discretion was the better part of Valor, and it would give him an opportunity to regroup.
The Tendrils tore underneath him, wrapping around his legs and pulling him into the air. He swore underneath his breath and tried to crush and burn the tendrils with his powers.
It had little to no effect.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Stagg Industry Labs:

Sapphire Stagg, and Rex's Son were felt gently by the Tendrils. There was something there inside of them that they wanted. Something important, but just not present the way it should be for the Tendrils. Their energy forms retracted, pulling themselves free of that area, leaving only scorched technology and burn marks against the glass tubes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Africa :
The tendrils burrowed through the ground outside the huge decimated and almost completely destroyed Pyramid. They dug deeper and deeper into the soil, until they finally reached what they were "looking" for.
The Orb of Ra.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Outside Time and Space:

Swamp Thing jerked violently, letting out a scream that sounded like a tree falling against some jagged rocks. His eyes rolled back into his head and huge leaves from the Yggdrasil shook themselves free from their biological moorings, leaving Kid Eternity, Mr. Cow and Rip clinging to the bark underneath for dear life.

Swamp Things essence, or at least his mind, encapsulated inside a single molecule of Chlorophyll, was torn free of the Mythical tree by a tendril of energy, something which Kid Eternity and Rip Hunter both tried to stop, being pulled free of their moorings, and yanked through the dimensional doorways that Anna was opening.

Mr. Cow blinked a few times, looking around the desolate place that he had been left alone in, before fervently licking his own genitals.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rip and Kid Eternity hit the ground in front of Buddy, only for Rip to be pulled up into the air, along with Naiad and Shade the Changing Man. The Artifacts were beginning to encircle Anna, the Orb of Ra, the B'Wanna beast Helmet, even Vixens Tantu totem, which had rocketed from across the city to meet it's new master.
The African masks that sat inside Cliff's room shot through the walls, and Tristess' limp form was dragged from the wreckage of the Baker's house. The elementals were encircling the floating baby's form, leaving only Buddy stood on the ground, untouched by the Tendrils. He didn't know what to expect, or what to do, he DID wonder why he wasn't chosen to be touched by the Tendrils when all the Alien's artifacts were floating around.
The Helmet. The Totem.
A tendril shot forth, hitting Buddy in the chest. The energy poured out of Buddy's eyes and he understood for a moment what was going on. The Parliaments were dead, they'd gone on with Maya to their reward, whilst God's Hands and voices cleaned up the mess they made.
Anna was trying to reconstruct the World according to the template, Maya had lain down. However, that template wouldn't work, the Template was now incomplete. She was latching onto these objects of power to try and placate the energies within her, the instincts that were tearing her apart.
"Sssh, Shhh." Buddy spoke softly, lifting off the ground and touching the top of the Babies head. The Helmet of B'Wanna Beast shot past, nearly taking the back of his head off, as he began to Cradle his child.
"Anna, hush. It's alright...Daddy's got you. Daddy won't let you go now."
Buddy held her close to him, and the artifacts began to slow in their orbit of the baby.
"Anna, Anna Sweetie. I know you're Scared, baby, but Daddy's going to help you. Daddy'll make it all better." Buddy rubbed her forehead gently with his thumb, and reached out into the Red with a deep gulp.
The World was beneath him, segmented, destroying itself. Earth was battling Fire, who struck against the Green, who tangled the Red, as it gushed into the Water. Instincts screamed out into the world, and the Wind whistled loudly through the crevasse of the Tectonics below.
Then nothing came.
Whiteness.
Anna's crying settled into a dull, low sob now as Buddy shouldered some of the burden. He had made a Universe before, he knew how it worked. He could make animals, at least whilst the Red was repaired. He took a deep gulp again and let go of Anna, kicking against the invisible forces and swimming into the centre of the universe. The Demiurgic forces beneath his fingertips came bubbling to the surface and Buddy became something he'd been considered to be before by his followers.
Buddy was now God.
The Energy that flowed through him began pulling the elementals outside into the Whiteness. He was rebuilding the Parliaments from the outside upwards, Geoforce for the Earth, Naiad for the Oceans, Firestorm for the Fire, Swamp thing for the Green, Tefé for the Red, Red Tornado for the wind. The core six elements were gathered for their new Parliaments. His fingers worked marvels, typing an unknown code of Amino-acid languages against the imprintable reality of nature. His Daughter was silent now, her Father had done what he promised and taken away the pain.
Buddy's eyes lit up with ideas forming inside his head. He wasn't the sort of let this kind of power corrupt him. Arguably he wasn't smart enough. He'd felt angry and hurt and corruptible by the cracks in the Red. He wasn't himself for so long, almost a year now, and his family had put up with him. Now the Red was fixed and Buddy was happy, finally. He could feel nature itself and he could feel.
Oh, Lord. He could feel it all.
"Is this what it's like, Anna? Is this why you were crying?"
Buddy tore through the Whiteness, past the Earth, and stepped into the Cosmos. He took in a deep gasp, pulling a hand into Space B and feeling the entire Universe inside his fingertips. The Animals, the Planets, the Chatter of Black Holes and White Stars, the anger of Red Stars, and the Fear of White Dwarfs.
"These ideas.they're not big enough anymore, Anna." He said to his daughter, the Elementals below looking up at the huge Buddy.
"We're going to need something else, Sweetie."
He looked below at the Elementals he'd not pulled in, at Dolphin and Shade, and considered for a moment that he needed something else.
"We need more Parliaments, we need fungus and Bacteria, and we need instincts and the mind and everything related to humans, Look."
He pointed below, as the world began to turn again. Humans on the surface of the planet wouldn't notice anything, their world hadn't stopped, but the Elements had. Scientists would later discover that Plants across the world stopped Photosynthesizing for twenty minutes; Animals did nothing but wait for that time. The Seas were calm; fires constantly put themselves out, whilst winds were barely existent.
New Parliaments were being created, Lady Quark at the centre, her powers were nuclear, but her transformations were almost like fission. She had been split down the middle with grief and rage for her own stature in life, for her family and world being destroyed, and forced to live in a universe she considered to be dead and corrupted, now she had divided herself, becoming an energy source for kindness and learning and awareness.
Metamorpho became the Human Elemental, a basis for all human information, since arguably; he was one of the most human heroes out there, despite his inhuman appearance. His life was ruined, but his family never faulted, and his love for them never skipped or missed a beat.
Shade's madness was from another realm, but he absorbed it and used it. He was a being of Instinct itself, Madness being only an inability to limit yourself or follow inhibitions, in human nature it's madness, in the natural world, it's often see as a good set of instincts.
Elastic-Girl was something new, she was Variant and she was change. Her body, as well as her role in the world, changed in size, and density and structure constantly, but her heart and her mind was always the same. She was receptive to new ideas and she was receptive to love and hope.
Kid Eternity, he wasn't just connected to important people from history. He was History, biologically as well as culturally, though Buddy noticed, as his touch fitted Eternity to the Parliaments, something shot from him, bursts of light shot from his fingertips down into the Earth below.
Buddy worked now on the remaining biological Parliaments, Viral Agents, Bacteria, Fungus building them from scratch and imbuing their agents with Avatar-like status.
Finally, as Buddy reached for the final piece of the puzzle, he saw there were three left; Thomas Kalamaku, Gloss and Rip.
Buddy moved down to Rip, who simply reached out his hand, taking Buddy's in his own.
Buddy was thrown off his feet by the sudden jolt of energy, as was Rip.
They both lay for a moment, their eyes dancing wildly in their sockets, before sitting bolt upright at the same moment.
"Hello God." They said simultaneously, before laughing together. A rare moment for creators.
"So, that's what time looks like then, Rip?"
"Yeah. It's strange, we always looked at it like an abstract concept, and all this time, we were almost a blueprint for it."
"We're cells within cells?" Buddy suggested, getting to his feet gently, and moving over to Thomas.
Tom "Pie Face" Kalamaku was a New Guardian, his power was to bring out the light in everything, but he was brain dead at the moment.
"Damnit" Buddy said to Rip, waving him over. For some reason Rip's tendrils were still wrapped around his body, but moving slowly. Almost as if they were trapped in time itself.
Rip looked down at Tom, and then over to Gloss.
"Buddy, the New Guardian's mission and purpose was an unmitigated failure, but what if we were to change that for a moment. What if we were to graft the good parts of the Guardians together?"
Buddy stopped for a moment, thinking this over. Maybe that could work? Maybe take the best from these beings and bootstrap them together.
"Are you prepared for Surgery then, God?"
"I'll need to wash my hands" Rip said with a smirk.
The Presence
The Seven Deadly forms of God watched the events unfolding below, forbidden by the Presence itself from taking action during this time.
The Spectre appeared to be bored. Mortals were always doing things like this, recreating and falling back to their most basic tenants.
However, something clicked inside the mind of the Word. He'd been given the dirty job of erasing the Parliaments before, and now he was forced to watch them rebuild that which he had just destroyed; that which he viewed as a poison on the Earth itself.
His hands clenched together and his body shook.
"Vengeance."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hours of seconds had passed by. The moments bleed into each other, and at times Buddy looked as though he were some kind of Kaleidoscopic Vishnu, his multiple arms, grafting the Biological and non-biological components of the Guardians to Gloss.

"What now?" He said. His breathing was labored, every revolution of the Earth was a beat of his heart. Every piece of damage to an ecosystem was damage to himself, he wished he could take this away from his Daughter, but it was her destiny; not his. He could only shoulder the burden for a short time.

"Now, I take Gloss and get back into the Time Stream, Buddy." Rip said, grabbing Animal man's hand.

"What? Why?"

"I'm too powerful to stay in one place, Buddy. It's too dangerous. I'm apparently the source of life in the world, and if someone found that out and killed me, at the start of time, then none of this would happen. The World would end."

Buddy rubbed the back of his head and looked at Rip, who picked Gloss up in his arms, opening an Aperture with a slice downwards of his flat hand.

"Jeez. Well, I'll be seeing you then, Rip."

"Take Care Buddy."

Rip was gone, leaving Buddy alone with himself for a moment. It wasn't long before his musings left him with the conclusion that he'd done all he could for the time being. Returning to his daughter, he took her back into his arms and said a silence prayer of Forgiveness.

The power and energy of the planet shot from Buddy back into his Daughter, throwing all of the Elementals, new and old onto his lawn. Anna began to cry against, and the artifacts hurtled around her body once more.

"Jesus. How the hell can I stop THAT?"

Tefé said nothing as she stepped forwards, the flesh of the Fallen New Guardians crawled off their bones, pushing themselves along the ground like huge fleshy worms, wrapping themselves up and into a skin tight and bulbous cocoon around the Artifacts and Anna. She hung in the air for a moment, before resting once more in the Amniotic fluid of the "womb" Tefé had built.

She turned to Buddy, sweat beading and dripping down her face, and took his hand.

"There. That should hold for a while, Buddy, but.I don't know how long it will, and I certainly wouldn't try to do that again." Tefe dropped onto a knee, and Shade was there to help her to her feet.

"A Womb with a view." He said simply, looking to Buddy, whose Melancholic look fell short of what he was actually feeling. So much devastation for what was essentially a short-term fix.

Where would they even start now?

The Naked hero sat down in front of the Womb, whilst his friends and family sorted themselves out, congregating and moving away from the Womb. Something about it unnerved them.

Ellen watched from a distance and sighed at her husband. She couldn't begin to comprehend what was going on in his head, but she knew that she needed to tend to Maxine and Cliff. After that she would be having words with her Husband. Strong ones.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hours past and night fell on Buddy Bakers house. He continued to sit in silence, looking at his daughter, suspended in Cytoplasm and Fluids. A figure stepped from the shadows and pulled down its Green Hood.
"Baker. We need to talk."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Deserts of Africa :

Sand particles began to form, rolling against each other, until it formed a hand, and slowly became a face. When it was last defeated it had been tricked into becoming a Silicate, and had only just begun to reform itself. It's powers seemed to be rejuvenated, and perhaps it had something to do with the Orb of Ra being pulled over it's Sandy head.

It let loose a Roar that the world has not heard for three hundred years.

It lived again.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Vastness of Space:
A New Planetary consciousness was born, and its cry's hurt its plates. The Planet it had latched onto was crumbling as it left, the Moon in its orbit fracturing and exploding into a dust field that spread into concentric rings around its pulsing gravitation field.
Another ring to add to its collection as it found and put a stop to that incessant crying.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

She stood in the doorway of the city, back and tail flat against the wall. It was cold, too cold for her. Her blood was beginning to slow itself down, almost coagulating within her veins. She had been separated from the Amalgamator, from its ancient home. She was aware that she wasn't alone in her separation.

She scuttled across the alleyway, and moved silently up the side of the building. She could feel the call of the Red, somewhere she had been once before.

Yet this Red seemed.closer to her, smaller than the red she remembers. Almost.artificial.

She would have to seek it out.

Animal Man - The Coming Year Preview

"We all have Families, Damnit. This doesn't make it easier." Animal man stood in front of the gathered Parliaments, his head hung low.

"It shouldn't be this way; it should never be this way.Please Zauriel, continue."

"Dearly beloved.We are gathered here today to commit the ashes of."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alec Holland's human form stood before the grouping of heroes, Linda, his first wife, in one arm, and his current wife, Abigail in the other.
"Buddy, we're the Pantheon now. The Presence is gone, and we're needed more than ever, will you take my hand?"
Alec's glowing green hand is presented to the Animal man and for the first time he feels the full effect of the Earth, the life blood of Maya in his body.
"I.."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It's over man! It's over!"

The army was moving into place. Hundreds of Metamorphae, their limbs stretched and their faces warped; A whole race of periodic tables, shambling towards the united front of human and Parliament members.

"It's never over!" Rex Mason shouted, as he rocketed into the air. His body changing into a sheet of Calcium, as streaks of bright light tore through the atmosphere, falling into the advancing Metamorphae Army like lances of energy.

The Metal Men were here.

Writers note: PHEW! What a lot of foreshadowing there. Lots of stuff to come, guys, lots and lots of stuff, and some of it might actually be good! I hope I didn't loose you towards the end there, I know I had a lot of explaining to do, and I hope it wasn't the boring exposition bit!

The Preview for the coming year was my attempt at blatantly aping Geoff John's version of this in JSA and Booster Gold. A little taster for coming plot threads and storylines, some are vague, and some highlighting cool events.

We've got a new status quo, and new plot threads to work off!
